I'm in 3rd year and am planning to prepare for CAT in the coming summer. I didn't go to any coaching classes or started Preparing till now. What material should I follow for getting the best results?

Should I opt for TIME material or any other material is equally good? My hometown doesn't have TIME or any other CAT coaching institutes and I'm planning to prepare on my own. What if I go with other individual materials like TMH (Tata McGraw Hill), is there any disadvantage over TIME or some other online material. Kindly comment on this also.

Answer:
First of all start with all the basics. Go back to school books if you have to .Whichever material you use , important thing is practicing constantly. Time's material is good ,though I find their it a bit haphazard. IMS material is little easier to practice with and CL's material is detailed. Along with these study materials buy books like Arun Sharma or TMG as all these study materials have limited amount of practice material , specialy in quants. Also join some free or paid mock program however you feel comfortable. On a personal note I think joining a coaching , atleast on weekends helps a lot. Not just the teaching part but meeting peers and discussing things helps. Best of luck:-)

As far as books / printed material is concerned, here is what I recommend: a) Coaching Institutes: If you get the full material of any coaching institute from a senior / second-hand copy, get that. It would be a safe bet. If not, you can get the correspondence course. The correspondence courses are often too costly and do not offer too much value for money. When it comes to coaching institute material, get something from IMS / TIME / CL. Don't look beyond the obvious here. b) Books: There are books by TMH, Arihant and Pearson. I personally prefer the two books by Pearson. They have good content and comprehensive coverage. TMH books, although good for Quant, are slightly lacking in other areas. c) Online CAT Coaching Course: There are a few online CAT Coaching courses available, which would be ideal for someone like you. My online course is available here: http://handakafunda.com/online-cat-coaching/ It has 400+ videos for concepts and solved examples. I also take two live online classes every week for doubt clarification. For someone in your situation, it should do the trick.

As regards material, go for the T.I.M.E. booklets. They're pretty thorough when it comes to covering all concepts and the various types of questions. I'm giving the 2014 attempt as well and have bought the McGraw Hill books. I've hardly used them as I find the TIME material more than sufficient. The important thing to remember is to maintain discipline in your preparation and be consistent in your studies. Join a coaching institute and be regular. Be sure to level your approach to make sure you peak in time for the real test.
