I've read the same figure as what David mentions in NYTimes, for data-scientists. It sounds high, but many companies made far more money out of those skills. You question seems to ask for the historical maximum point: this might be a fellow alumni of mine. Graduated in 2002, two Masters in Engineering and Quantitative Finance — he was a trader for Goldman Sachs, dealing very exotic financial products: base salary was around £250k iirc in London, plus at least as much in bonus (and probably over-shot it). He had a year-worth of experience: two internships, plus had been de facto working fo six months there. He was snappy, and a basket-case of massive pride, social awkwardness outside of conversations on Finance, and math; he had by far the clearest view on what financial markets made, however—and has probably retired before the 2007 crash. He was on top of anyone else I knew, but wasn't alone up there.
