How I can get a job in Indian postal department?

At the age of early twenties, if I get a job in Indian beauracracy, over an average job in a large multinational firm, which one should I take?

  • I am a young system engineer in one of the largest multinational firms. I have an average salary but I enjoy the freedom of career choice in private sector rather than public sector. In my sector the value of my work increases with the years of my experience. However I am being constantly pinged by my parents and relatives to appear for Staff selection committee and other such examinations, in order to get an officer's job in Indian bureaucracy. I enjoy leading an honest and free life, where I might have the option to do whatever I want achieve. I can see such scenario in private sector jobs, but I have no experience in the public sector. I believe the responsibilities in the job shall be too great to allow any personal choice of work. Moreover I don't think that your experience increases your value in a public sector job. Kindly clarify if the thoughts that cloud my mind are true. In the long run, what is a better choice? It would be great if a few fellow quorans in Indian government jobs and bureaucracy could answer this question. PS: I don't have much interest in lucrative salaries and facilities. I wish to perform in my job and do something that matters. I believe that a job does not only decide how rich you will become, but it also decides what kind of man you would become.

  • Answer:

You should definitely opt for Public Sector. If you are not after lucrative salaries in private sector, public sector is the place for you to be. You can enjoy life in Public sector, surely not in private sector. I am myself a sufferer of this.

Having first hand experience in both the sectors, I would like to suggest you go for private sector if you want to earn money and that also honestly and also if you are hard working, ... if you want to get secured and want moderate work pressure, Public Sector job outweighs Private Sector. Not all Public Sector jobs are alike. Those which are purely under State or Central Govt have much lesser  work pressure to deal with as compared to Public Sector Enterprises like NTPC, BHEL, IOCL, ONGC, etc. But they all have one thing in common, i.e. job security. I worked in Tata Motors & then joined ONGC, .. finally in Indian Railways. Work order: Tata Motors> ONGC> Indian Railways Monotony & Lack of learning environment : Indian Railways > ONGC> Tata Motors  (well, this was the case with me, everybody has different cases)  Do what you like, don't just listen everybody. Regarding SSC, not all SSC jobs are alike. There are jobs like Income tax inspector, CBI, etc which are purely field jobs and you'll on move most of the times whereas there are jobs like Central Secretriat Assistants and Auditors which are totally desk jobs (9-5), ...
