Mathematics major vs mathematics degree?

How much is a degree in computer science helping in being a better programmer vs a degree in mathematics?

  • Answer:

Thanks for A2A I just finished my four year graduation in Computer Science and all I that I have learnt in programming is practice and exploration of the depth of the subject on my own. Most of the computer science algorithms require a certain mathematical skill.I had elementary maths courses during my graduation. Linear algebra , numerical methods , and calculus but still sometime where there is deep mathematical knowledge required I sometimes struggle. Being a programmer requires learning and practice and that comes on its own. If you have an interest in mathematics then for sure go for it, Side by side study what you are interested in computer science. But if you want to devote all your time basically to computer science you can go for that degree, In the end you would realize that degree won't matter. What will matter is the depth of knowledge that you developed. There is a facebook employee and an awesome programmer who I admire . He was a mathematician but he is a great programmer. So there are no limits on what you can do without even a degree. Hope that helps. Happy Coding :)

If your goal is to be a better programmer specifically (by opposition to finding a job) then a degree is not necessary. The most usefull thing to do is do do do! There are a lot of tutorials on the internet and forums to ask questions if you are stuck somewhere. Sit in front of your computer and train!

As a student who spend more than one year in the Department of Mathematics and more than three years in Computer Science related major. I'd like to say the degree in computer science degree help "pretty much".  In my view, some fundamental courses in  computer science  like  OS, Algorithm, Database, Information Storage and Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence, Gaming Design, will give you the opportunity to practice with different programming method, the course works and projects will demand you to code a lot.  There might even have a course called "Programming Studio" in CS track. When it comes to how much the mathematics will help a programmer? It is similar to another common question: "How many mathematic knowledge do the Computer Scientist or a Coder need".  If you just want to be a programmer, the brief answer is not too much. If you want to be a good computer scientist, who will spend much time to solve problems like "P=NP? or P!=NP",yes, the background of mathematics do help, but again, not so much. By the way, why not major in CS while minoring in Mathematics. : )
