What can I do to get into a good university?

I wish to get into a good engineering university in the USA for my degree, but my parents really cannot afford to pay for my education. What are the chances that I will get a scholarship? How can I do that?

  • I am a 17 year old Indian girl. I want to learn mechanical or electrical engineering as I love physics and mathematics. My English is also quite fluent and my parents are willing to send me to the USA. They are willing to contribute as much money as they can but it will not amount to much (2-5 lakh INR per year). How do I apply for a scholarship? How can I arrange for a part-time-job, scholarship and a student loan? I am going to give the SAT test and the subject tests. Is there any other test that I need to give?

  • Answer:

Generally for Masters and PhD courses, it is easy to get scholarship. I know that from personal experience and few of my friends also got scholarship when they applied for masters courses. I have no first hand exp of scholarship availability for Undergrad courses. I would suggest you to take SAT and then make a list of universities where you would like to apply. Write to admission office directly to understand about chances of getting a scholarship.

Actually I was also seaching for such exams but after a long stretch of search I found out that foreign universities accept scores of several entrance exams like GRE , TOEFL , IELTS , GMAT . They take up the merit list and give scholarships accordingly. What I did was I consulted 3 to 4 universities and tgeir counseller told me to get a bit of corporate experience and then opt for masters degree. You can also go on to their website and get in contact with their respective counsellors . In fact they will guide you in a better way . And the reason I insist on consulting 3 4 universities is because the opinion differs and perspective also. So you will get a wide idea about all your doubts regarding admission and scholarship stuffs. I would suggest you to make a list of colleges that you would opt for and consult their counsellers.

Undergraduate courses in us don't have much seats for international students. from top tier institution it is really difficult to get in ...... all of them give financial aid. Financial aid is need blind in very few institutions but some universities are very generous in these matters(only top tier ones). If you have property over 1.5 cr INR they will simply ask you to sell some. Institutions except top tier universities don't give financial aid. 2 of my friends went to UCLA and PennState without financial aid (they had to fund their first year then they were able to fetch some jobs and scholarships) Now comes jobs. You can only work for 20 hours per week. Then, loans banks and institutions usually give amount up to 30lac INR. Will that be sufficient? GOOD DAY! GREAT LIFE!
