How much should a URL expander cost?

  • We've produced our own internal expander for TWIMPACT and I've transformed it into a REST service. As just putting it up for nothing would probably create much traffic I was wondering how many links we could allow for free and how much we should take for commercial expansion. - multiple (and unknown) shorteners supported - deep expansion (i.e. http://t.co -> http://bit.ly -> real) - link / media (images, video) distinction - thumbnail links included for media

    I guess it depends on the targeted demographic. As a web app developer, I personally wouldn't pay for something like that as I'd just unshorten it myself or use a free Ruby gem like: gem 'unshorten'. If I was a non-technical user, it may be a different story but I'm trying to imagine a scenario where a non-technical user would need this as a regular service. However with the other possible features you mentioned, like media links, thumbnails, etc... There might be a better market. Perhaps look at some service like http://embed.ly to gauge some similar features and their value.
