What does the Conservation Association do?

What is the safety record of the Student Conservation Association (SCA)?

  • Specifically, has anyone volunteered for the National Conservation Crews via the SCA? What was your experiance like?

  • Answer:

I am an alumna of the SCA program and very proud to say so. I served on two crews thus far, Harper's Ferry National Historic Park (2012) and Wind Cave National Park (2013). Both summers were memorable and full of life changing experiences. As one park ranger described his job he used the word "passion." Do you think I became a park ranger because the job pays well? I became one because I have a passion for the environment. I don't know the exact numbers for SCA records but I will say this, SCA crews are incredibly safe. Before any sort of project we establish Take 5 For Safety and discuss hazards in the field. Take 5 is SCA's way of being a responsible crew member while maintaining safety at all times. We also have Emergency Response Plans in place. No matter where you serve your crew leaders will create one. ERP's include where the nearest hospital is, the contact info for the park and SCA's emergency hotline. I hope this answers your question. And if you have anymore, don't be afraid to ask. Welcome to an amazing program that will possibly change your life.
