How to choose appropriate design pattern?

Why can't I choose/design a pattern for the "foxing" or "sidewall" on www.vans.com/customs?

  • In the 80's in addition to custom design combinations, for an additional cost customers could pick the "scene" of their choice to complete the custom Vans shoe design. The scene was a name for a design printed on the sidewall/foxing/friction tape.

  • Answer:

gave the same answer I would have given with respect to designs embedded into the rubber sidewalls: molds. Molds are very expensive and need to be reused thousands of times for the company to break even on their cost. With respect to designs "printed on the sidewall/foxing/friction tape," I suspect you are looking at a QA problem. It's likely that Vans was unhappy with the durability or long-term appearance of designs printed on the sidewalls of the shoes it created during the 1980s and has not arrived at a solution that they really feel good about, so rather than allow a sub-optimal consumer experience they just exclude that part of the shoe from customization.

For a pattern/design on the rubber parts they have to open molds. This is expensive. They need to have a 'minimum order quantity' per mold to earn their money back. One pair of shoes doen't cover the costs. I hope its clear.
