If it's in the USA, the tax returns of all tax-exempt charities are public documents.  Usually the charity will make a copy available to you and in many states they are online on the state website concerned with charitable organizations.  These are not easy tax returns to read, but with a little effort, you can figure out how much goes to expenses vs how much goes to the cause. also has a good suggestion in her response.
