  1) Concept of "Patter variables" by Talcott Parsons which have element of stress or strain between each dichotomic set of variable. Analogy: Concept of dipole in physics. 2) Marx conflict theory: Conflict will only result in social movement when internal forces of conflict  are intensified enough to overcome consolidating forces of social structure. Analogy: Object only changes its state of rest or motion when there is net resultant force.   These are just two I can remember, this is not exhaustive list, there are many others
