Can any commercial airplane fly upside down?
-
I've seen questions asking if the A380 () and B747 () can fly upside down. I've seen military aircraft flying upside down, but is it possible for any commercial airplane to fly upside down?

Answer:
It sort of depends on what you mean when you say "commercial" aircraft. It also depends on what you mean by flown upside down. If you mean extended inverted flight then the answer is likely no. Extended inverted operation creates problems with fuel supply and oil supply for engines that are designed to be operated in a certain orientation. Aircraft that are required to fly inverted for extended periods of time require modifications to fuel and oil systems. I've flown in an L-29 jet trainer aircraft that allowed inverted flight for 30 seconds at a time due to engine oil sump issues. Rolling aircraft inverted temporarily is another matter. Even large aircraft like the A380 can likely be barrel rolled at a constant 1G. Rolling an airplane at a constant 1G would have nil effect on the fuel and lubrication systems for the engines. Bob Hoover, pilot extraordinaire and airshow pilot, performed a demonstration in a Shrike Commander twin engine airplane where he poured a glass of iced tea while barrel rolling the airplane at 1G (video here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMWxuKcD6vE ) The Shrike is an airplane that is operated commercially, meaning for profit by FAA licensed businesses so, yes, commercial aircraft can be rolled and flown inverted. If you are referring to large jumbo jet airliners, then I believe the answer is still yes, they could do so in flight test but operating restrictions by the airlines would likely preclude someone from ever rolling one of these aircraft intentionally in standard operations.

I used to work for the imaging radar group at JPL, and we had use of a Convair CV990 (a somewhat less than commercially successful 707 competitor), the Galileo 2. We had the 990 because, I was informed, our 990 was capable of flying upside down, because we had instruments (IR and uwave), which faced downward which occasionally required upward calibration, and it was decided more important to rotate the plane than the in-place instrument. And we had test pilots who could do this. The Galileo 2 was lost at March AFB during a take off attempt some decades back; I think the land gear caught fire, and the crew had to use the chutes. The plane was replaced by a DC-8. I don't know if the 8 was modified or whether the 990 had designed that way. It certainly raises all kinds of questions about gravity, fuel flow, and what do the non-piloting crew do.

The Boeing 367-80 was barrel rolled in 1955. The 367-80 was a prototype jet aircraft that led to the development of the Boeing 707. This is the first and only known incident of a commercial jetliner flying upside down. The barrel roll was a 1G maneuver. The fuel system is not under any risk during a 1G maneuver.

No. Someone once executed a barrel-roll in a Boeing 707, during which it was momentarily upside down, but no commercial airplane could actually be flown upside down.

Actually this is under plans ... designers and engineers are working hard to make possible. Recently BAE animated mothballedhttp://www.aerospace-technology.com/features/featurebae-mothballed-intercity-vertical-lift-aircraft/ and it is in concept level only..... It will take much time may years to come true ...
