Where is organic farming applied?

How is applied mathematics used in farming?

  • I am meaning advanced applications...modeling etc..?

  • Answer:

At Farmscape, we use circle-packing math to maximize crop-spacings in our small-scale rectangular beds. We have fairly advanced models for crop layout and also for gantt charts of our seasonal management on the calendar, plugged into climate data. We geek out about harvest weight and quality optimization per area over time, while also trying to minimize labor, material inputs, and crop risk. I think large-scale field farmers use much cooler "Precision Ag" technology to model everything, from fine-tuned fertilizer application based on soil test metrics and aerial imaging, to irrigation patterns, to crop rotations, etc. There is much math and modeling in pedology, meterology, fluid dynamics for irrigation systems, not to mention business metrics for costs and pricing, decay functions on aging infrastructure, and on and on. Why, you think farming is for yokels?
