What is the best paper for drawing with pen and ink?

    Schoellershammer - one of the oldest paper manufacturer has a fantastic range of drawing paper. I'd rate it amongst the best paper for ink drawing. It's not cheap but very good value if you consider qualities such as non ageing, acid free, recyclable... You can find some extremely robust paper in their "graphics" range, that will react exactly right to pen and ink, so good that you may even scratch the surface with a razor blade without damaging the paper core, whether for small corrections or as a lightning technique.

You can use ballpoint with most sketchbook and even photocopy paper.  Ballpoint does not have blotching and bleeding problem like crowquill so any paper with smooth and some tooth surface will be just fine.  For crowquill, you will have to be really picky about the paper you choose, you can use bristol board (James mentioned above), blueline comics paper, and any high quality bleed proof paper.

an archival, acid-free, 178 gsm smooth paper would be perfect; my personal favorite being the Pentalic "Paper for Pens" brand with that spec, it's perfect for any type of pen.  still, nothing substitutes the 'trial and error' way of looking for the best paper for you.

Bristol board paper is good because it is very smooth, which allows you to run the pen nib over the surface very easily. It also allows the ink to dry on the surface without bleeding into the paper texture, so you get nice clean lines of ink.
