Answer:
Grasslands are primarily occupied by herbaceous vegetation such as grasses, sedges, and forbs Root system of most grasslands are very very deep, with rich soil underneath Most herbivores that live in a grassland environment (with exception to the rodents) are ruminants, with the adaptation to graze and live off of grasses only. These animals are called ungulates. Animals in the African grassland include wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, lions, hyenas, wild dogs, meerkats, various species of antelope (including blackbuck, gazelles, gerenuks, and kudus), buffalo, elephants, warthogs, foxes, etc. Animals in the North American grasslands include mule and whitetail deer, pronghorn, bison, timber wolves, coyotes, prairie dogs and richardson's ground-squirrel, burrowing owls, black-footed ferrets (now being reintroduced), elk, bighorn sheep, various species of hawks (such as the red-tail and sparrow hawk), jackrabbits and hares, foxes, etc. Grassland terrain ranges from rolling hills to a flat landscape; grasslands even exist on mountains above the treeline and foothills of such places as Montana, Colorado and Alberta. Grasslands exist[ed] naturally in all continents except perhaps Antarctica Serengeti generally refers to the vast grassland of Africa Prairie generally refers to the vast grassland of North America (between Canada and the USA) Average rainfall of most natural grasslands ranges from 500 to 1200 mm per year, and most rainfall occurs in late spring and early summer for the temperate grasslands. African grasslands see an annual rainfall of 800 to 1200 mm per year over a 6 to 8 month period, proceeded by extreme drought until the next rains come. Trees are almost non-existent in the Prairie grassland because of the low precipitation, except along river banks.
