Using a Verizon/CDMA+GSM iPhone on a US GSM network
-
Verizon have simplified/Europeanized their plans such that you can just buy the phone outright upfront and pay for service month-to-month (I think!). Given that, if I were to buy a new Verizon iPhone next week, I would own a GSM+CDMA phone outright and not have a long-term contract with Verizon. In the future, could I then put a US (not overseas) SIM card in that phone and have it work? Or would I still need to pay a ransom to get the phone unlocked to use it on, e.g. T-mobile or AT&T? Note I know Verizon let you put in an overseas GSM SIM when you travel overseas. This question is not about that, but rather about using a US carrier's SIM in a "Verizon iPhone" (the ones with both CDMA and GSM).

It works. I switched from VZ to ATT with my family. I am an Android user. My kids all had VZ iPhones. They work perfectly. US ATT sim in a VZ sold iPhone. (Note that the opposite is not true. If you buy an iPhone from ATT, it will not work on VZ.)

I've just done the reverse, using an unlocked iPhone 6 I bought for T-Mobile (from Apple) on Verizon. All the iPhone 6 models [presuming no changes here on the 6s] are GSM/CDMA[/etc], and if you're buying outright from Apple (and VZ as well but haven't personally confirmed) should be totally free of SIM lock. (NB: in my experience this only applies to the 6 and up; my unlocked 5s was missing CDMA support entirely)

My mom, partner, and myself have done this with verizon iphones. It worked, but not quite perfectly because they were 5's. It's worth noting that until the 5s, they didn't support LTE on tmobile(Or att even i think?) so they were limited to 3g and there was some tomfoolery with frequencies. With the 5s/6/6s a verizon phone works anywhere that an iphone works with full network speed and everything.
