Short term RV insurance needed
-
I'm going to TTITD, and a friend is offering me use of her very cool RV (for which I've offered to pay a somewhat below fair sum). The problem is, how do I get insurance for a short period of time? She's willing to put me on the title if that helps, but I don't want to use her insurance so that if there is some kind of accident her rates don't go up for the rest of her life. I've called one company (Progressive) and they are unwilling to offer any insurance for a term of less that one year, with the early cancellation penalty being the cost of the remainder of the year. Has anyone successfully navigated this? I'm OK for it being pricey, just not a whole year's insurance pricey.

Answer:
I use AAA, and if I remember correctly, we just called them and added an RV for x amount of time, and it wasn't a problem. Have you called your own insurance?

I don't have currently insurance. I live in Brooklyn and don't have a car. Should have said that.

You may be covered under your friend's insurance as an authorized driver. Just don't have an accident.

I just did a bunch of monkeying with my insurance. Switched, canceled, switched back, canceled again.... Each change was easy enough to do by contacting the company. Refunds were issued. So it seems to me that you could just start insurance and then cancel it when you're ready. Maybe set up monthly payments for a smaller out of pocket cost upfront.

In my experience no company will give you a short term or part time insurance policy unless you have a primary policy and a primary vehicle. I mean I'm sure it exists, but that's been my experience going from having an insured car + trying to do something like this, to just using carshares and trying to do it. They basically want you to show its not your main vehicle. I'd check rv living and general rv forums. The shortest I've ever seen was something like 3 months though. You might find rental insurance, but once again, I've always seen that as a bolt on to an existing policy AND you'd probably have to jump through some hoops.

Did Progressive give you a number for the year? We insure our RV with them (it is the only vehicle we have and we have foreign licenses and no history in the US for insurance) and it was really not that bad for the year. Probably expensive for one short period, but not horrific. We've had a few issues in the 11,000 miles we've done in ours and Progressive have been totally awesome the entire time. But to be honest, it may be the only way for short term to go on your friends insurance. But it should be maybe $600 maximum to go it on your own. Also: What about taking a year's insurance and then cancelling when you get back? No refunds at all? Don't mention it up front maybe, but worth considering.
