COLLEGE MAJORS AND MINORS?

If one would want to be a police officer, what are some ideal majors/minors to consider in college?

  • I understand what someone majors/minors in isn't of much interest to the police department, but what majors/minors would be helpful while on the job as a police officer? Also:I personally was considering majoring or minoring in Communications, and then majoring/minoring in maybe Criminal Justice (Because it interests me). I've heard that criminal justice isn't the best thing to major/minor in when becoming a police officer. Why is that?

  • Answer:

Criminal justice is the most natural fit for police work because students learn about the legal system, prisons, etc. If you really want to become a police officer, find out about applying and attending the police academy. Some jurisdiction have programs that reimburse police officers for college tuition, so your education may get paid for.

Other answers

Foreign Language (it very beneficial to be bilingual). Forensic Law, Psychology, Computers. Any of these + others would be good choices for a major or minor. Some say not to major in Criminal Justice because you get enough of that in the Police Academy. Your GPA is also important.
