One of the hardest thing for me to do is inform my manager what I'm working on. I feel like I'm just boasting. How do I let me manager know?

It's hard to be recognized in a big organization. I'm considered new (been working for 3 years), and I see that people need to keep informing their reporting-managers what kind of things they're working on by keeping their manager up to date or if someone mentions their work. However, our managers are busy and we can't always just sit and talk about our selves. One of the hardest thing for me to do is to inform manager what I'm working on. I feel like I'm just boasting. How do I NOT feel that way, yet convey to her the various things I'm working on? I feel like my manager doesn't know how hard I work and when we do have meetings together, she always mentions this other person who honestly doesn't do as much as I do. This is hard for me since I'm a quiet person and rarely talk about myself.

Answer:
My managers asked for a weekly summary via internal email. They liked a very brief statement of accomplishments last week and challenges this week.

Managers do not like surprises - especially when things go wrong. Depending on the turnover of your work assignments, I would recommend a monthly or quarterly e-mail listing your projects, estimated conclusion date, and any details which could delay that deadline. This could be just a simple "For your information" type e-mail. So if you case work concludes fairly frequently, do this once a month. But if your projects are like mine that take months if not years to conclude, then a quarterly e-mail is sufficient. You might even notice a pattern with your "details which could delay." If there is such a pattern, ask your manager about any tips to help you resolve those details.
