What should I expect in my Marketing position Interview?

If I was told that i was over qualified for a position and asked to apply for a different role, what should I expect on the interview?

  • I had a great panel interview and was sure I got the job. the next week I was told that they felt I was a great fit for the company but over qualified for the position. He referred me to other positions explaining that they both would better suit my salary expectations and skill set. I applied and have an interview this week. What should I expect on the interview? My first interview was almost 2 hours long... what suggestions for salary negotiation are out there?

  • Answer:

This is wonderful news! They like you, they think you are a good fit for the company, and they're trying to get you in. You can expect another interview that may be just as long. I would focus on the job's responsibilities and opportunities for growth within the company. I've heard people say not to be the first to throw out a salary number, but it seems as if they already know what your salary expectations are. I suggest going to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupation Outlook Hanbook at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/ and see what the median salary is for the position that you've applied to, to see if their offer is within the ballpark.

I would expect the same type of interview. Your chances for getting hired are probably pretty good but there may be other highly qualified applicants, so be professional in all respects. I never worried about salary negotiation. I've been pleasantly surprised by excellent offers that I accepted.

They have seen your value and want to use you, great! In this job market, I wouldn't play hardball over salary, I'd take what they offer and renegotiate after 6 or 12 months, if appropriate.

What type of Job and is it a rare position? also answer this question: Do they need you or do you need them? (thats where it all lays)

First, they want you in the company. First question: "Why did one devalue your true worth?" Game on. They have already started the negotiation process.Determine your true worth, level the playing field, and be willing to walk away if the terms are not within one's "negotiable" standards. Go in willing to be used, one will surely be used. Safe Journey

Being over qualified means that you have a degree or background that would pay you more than the job position they are offering. Expect the interview to be the same as any other job. Remember to negotiate for the right pay to meet your needs. Good luck!

If it was me, I'd be pleasant and responsive but I'd let them carry the ball. If the interview progresses in a positive manner let them outline the salary and benefits as well as the responsibilities of the position. If they're agreeable to you - fine. If there's a problem then you can offer alternatives. I've got to tell you that if a prospective employer told me I was overqualified, I think I'd be inclined to walk and pursue other prospects.
