What do we use ammonia for in chemistry?

Can I use ammonia in my HE front-loader washer to remove the stiffness from my towels and wash cloths?

  • Heloise says to wash my towels and wash cloths in non-sidsing ammonia to remove odors and stiffness. I have 2 questions: 1. How do I tell if the ammonia I bought is non-sudsing? It doesn't say on the label, and I can't find any that does. 2. Is it safe to use ammonia in my HE front-loading washer?

  • Answer:

Run them through the washer with no detergent, a couple of times if necessary. Then use very little detergent from now on, especially if you have a water softener. I never use a fabric softener on my towels because it causes them to repel water and you want them 'thirsty' when you get out of the shower.

Other answers

Not sure. But I always add baking soda to my wash, takes odors out really well. The only reasons that your towels are stiff is that you may be using too much detergent. Do you use fabric softener? Other then that , I really do not know.
