Has anyone been on the "Halloween Train" in New Hope?

Ethical dilemma: a train Is out of control. You can turn it, or not. Both options lead to some one's death. What do you do? Read below.

  • A train has gone too fast, and is out of contol. If it continues on its course, it will hit a school bus, surely killing anyone inside, if anyone is inside. You happen to sit at a turnstyle and have the ability to derail the train, but this random stranger you know nothing about, will be crushed. Assume neither the bus nor person will get out of the way. They will die for sure. There is no hope for the train to stop. Doing nothing ensures hitting the bus, thus a non-decision is a decision. I also did not say for sure the bus has kids. It could be full, it could be empty. It's running, so there def. is a driver. Also, kids could be teens, first graders, disabled. You cannot see who is inside the bus. You know nothing about the man either. Could be anybody. You could kill the future cure for cancer, you could kill the next Hitler. You don't know, and you don't have enough time to warn either of them. As a matter of fact, precious seconds are speeeding by. What do you do?

  • Answer:

Take the possible lesser damage option. One man vs at minimum 1 driver, at max 30+

Which choise involves the least death? " The needs of the many, out weigh the needs of the few. Or the one." Spock

Follow the protocol of the company in that situation. What was the route the train was planning to take? Do that.

Way i see it is that if an empty bus is stuck on the tracks the driver would be a moron not to just get out. So probably if there are no kids there is no driver so let the train hit the bus. Certainly in an emergency situation if you know about this bus being there then you know if there are people in it or not. In which case id choose to save as many lives as possible and turn the train. IF the idiot driver is assumed to remain in the bus and he is alone and for whatever reason a stranger is tied to the second track and someone will die no matter what then theres really no decision. Just sit back and let things run their course. Besides, the guy in the bus has a skightly better chance of survival that the guy getting hit directly.

I suppose I would derail the train. If I don't know whether there are kids on the bus and don't know anything about the driver or the random stranger, I can only make the best decision with the information I have at the time. So, I would go with the choice that has the least potential to result in additional deaths beyond the one person I know will die.

The answer to "this" specific scenario is to sacrifice the one for the many. From my viewpoint I do not know since my action or inaction could affect the outcome. Here's one for you..You are on a bridge and a train is coming down the track, 5 people are stuck on the track. There is quick a hefty chap on the bridge with you, if you push him off his body would stop the train and you would save the 5 people..would you push him off the bridge?

This is very much the dilemma Churchill faced over the Coventry air raid. Do we warn the people or try to shorten the war? And, if we DON'T warn the people will the secret we keep (the Enigma Code) be sufficient to save more lives in the long run? Was he correct or not? Certainly the people of Coventry wouldn't have thought so; and yet keeping that secret may have been the most significant factor in Germany losing WW2. (Had Britain succumbed before the US became involved, we may all now be living in the Third Reich.) But on a personal level we have Sophie's Choice and I'm so pleased that I've never been in that position. Faced with this dilemma I'd derail the train and HOPE that something would save the man. Opting for the lesser of two evils seems reasonable.

There is no right or wrong answer, any decision would have to be based on three things, reason, observance, and experience. One would choose the option that would save the most lives, Based on observance, experience, and reason. Different people would make different decisions, we don't all share the same life's experiences.
