What is Prom exactly?

What is prom?

  • I understand that prom is some kind of special dance, but why is it so special? My friend also said I shouldn't go unless I am a senior because it is way expensive. Could you explain what prom is about exactly, and why is it so special?

  • Answer:

The word "prom" is actually a shortcut for "promenade" which is the walk taken by participants into a ballroom or formal dance. This formal event is meant for upperclassmen in high school and occurs towards the end of the school year. There's the Junior, Senior or combined Junior-Senior Prom. The Senior Prom tends to be more special because it is the last one the high school kids attend before embarking into their futures (college, marriage, jobs, their own apartments, etc.) Traditionally, a "King", "Queen" and their "Court" are elected by the student body to reign over the event. People that go to the prom are dressed formally, like black-tie or tuxedos for guys, gowns and wrist flowers for girls. Of course it costs to make the pageantry and all the festivities successful -- clothing, transportation, food, decorations, music, sometimes even hotel accommodations. At the end of it all, there's a load of pictures taken and memories that last forever.

It has , and will always be, a coming of age ceremony and dance, It is a moment that states I've made it, I'm newly mature, and I want to strut my stuff in a quiet reserved fashion. To me, it was the icing on the cake, so to speak, for my 12 year long struggle to graduate and become a productive part of society as a whole. It will always be a time of remembrance and reflection for years to come.

It's a chance for kids to dress up in formal clothes (tuxedo, fancy dress) goto a fancy dinner, then a big dance. When I was in school, the kids also would go on a day long trip the next day, usually to someplace like an amusement park, not sure if that is still done. The expensive part is renting the tuxedo, and usually a limo. Usually Juniors and Seniors go, but Seniors can also invite sophomores/freshmen I think as a date. If you were dating someone, it would a fun thing to do together, if you were not dating anyone, it would be an expensive first date.

Prom is usually a school even that is planned by students from the beginning of the year. It's very romantic usually and it's a time where a high school girl gets to feel like a princess. Homecoming is usually just people grinding, crappy music, and short dresses. It's like going to a club, you go with friends it's whatever. Prom you could go with a group of friends, but most go as a couple. You wear a long gown, do your hair all nice, buy shoes you'll never wear again, but fancy jewelry. Some people go in limos to dinner, then arrive at the school In a limo. You get there and it's usually a dim and romanic setting, lots of slow dancing if you're lucky, you get pictures taken together and usually will have special fun events going on around the dance. It is expensive though. I went my junior and senior year. Between tickets, the dress, shoes and jewelry I had already spend almost $200.
