My dog has really, really bad separation anxiety?

My dog has BAD separation anxiety from me. How do I help her?

  • I recently got a dog from a shelter and she has grown to be really attached to me. She has severe separation anxiety from me, to the point where she cries when I take a shower even tho she can see me through the glass. I left her today with my mom for 6 hours and I was told that she sat by the door and cried for the WHOLE 6 hours I was gone. How do I help her?

  • Answer:

My breeder suggested placing one of your unwashed shirts in her crate or bed while you are away. Your scent will comfort her. I applaud you for adopting a shelter dog. Who knows what that girl went through. Best of luck.

I would suggest slowly training her to be more happy/content in her own company and with others. Get her a fun and interesting toy (e.g. a Kong) that she can play with and/or a comfy/safe blanket/pad where she feels safe. Settle her down to play and then leave for a shot time (a few minutes). *Slowly* increase the time until she becomes more comfortable (up to ~3-4 hours) - hopefully she will learn to feel safe/content with others or alone if she is able to play and relax. It's also a good idea for her to spend more time with other family members in order to become comfortable around them. Remember, when you leave dogs don't actually know you're coming back!

Your baby may need a cuddle buddy. If another pup is not an option try a fluffy toy for her to play and nap with. While nothing can compete with your affection, she may eventually find some comfort in having a familiar companion until you return.

there are a few ways to stop her from crying. once everyday you can put her somewhere where she cant see you. do this for a short period of time each day and after a few days when she gets used to it slowly increase the time that your not with her. when you first start she will cry for the first few days when you leave her but after some time she should get used to it and stop crying

Before leaving for the day, (and again in the evening/night) take her for a long walk. It always surprised me how many people miss the importance of the walk.
