What does "accompany herself on the piano" mean?
-
“...on birthdays or other occasions would quite often give a recital of a verse she had composed specially for the event, accompanying herself on the piano.” Does it mean" she read the poem as well as play the piano" or"she follows the music and read her poem"? I'm not a native speaker, so I'm a little confused about this phrase.

Answer:
She is reciting the poem or singing a song AND playing background music for it on the piano herself, not with the help of a band or recorded music.
