Are there any medical restrictions for EMT'S?

Can I get opinions from medical pros, emts, etc?

  • I'm deathly allergic to penicillin and have never found a medic alert tag that holds up to my lifestyle. bracelets break constantly, necklaces irritate me. my latest try is a nylon wristband with Velcro closure but it's bulky and the Velcro catches on everything. I thought I had a genius idea by thinking tattoo!! of course many have already done it and there seems to be varying opinions on the effectiveness. I'm not a tatto type person but this is not a temporary condition so it makes sense to me. I'm thinking relatively small and not anything cutesy. just the medical symbol and penicillin allergy on right wrist? I wear watch on left. have any of you seen this in someone you treated/dealt with? is it effective or do tattoos on the wrist change enough that they become illegible? any advice?

    I have never seen this. And, in all honesty, I feel as though in an emergency situation a medical tattoo would be quickly overlooked because of the frequency we see small wrist tattoos on patients. There are many signs we, as first responders, look for that would indicate an allergic reaction. A medical alert bracelet or necklace is just a failsafe. If I were you I would forego the tattoo, find an option that is the most comfortable, and try your best to acclimate yourself to wearing it.

Personally, a tattoo is not something I'd look to for an allergy. Have you tried one of those silicone wrist bands? Surely there's a place you could have it customized to look like a medical ID bracelet.

I don't recommend a tattoo love, even though your allergies likely won't change over time. I would suggest you get a sterling silver bracelet made up by a jeweller that specifically lists your allergies - they can engrave anything you like on it. People will always look for necklaces or bracelets in an emergency, not tatoos.

The reality is, if someone is unresponsive and or in a crisis stopping to admire their tattoos isn't a part of a routine medical assessment. We look at things like vital signs, physical presentation, surgical scars, injection sites, things like that, but stopping to read tattoos is not routinely done. Perhaps you can either get a more durable bracelet maybe one made from tungsten, or maybe figure out what on the necklace is irritating you and resolving whatever that specific issue may be.

I would definitely try Medic Alert (again). I've so seldom been faced with the need for penicillin that I might not worry as much as you are. I think the medical pros are inclined to not use penicillin unless YOU say it is okay.

I had a medic alert tag attached to my watch. Course, if you don't wear a watch that won't work. :-/

I asked a former Ask member who is a nurse what she thought. Here is her response: "Medic alert tats are becoming more popular. I'm not sure how I feel about them. I think if they are legible and obvious they are helpful, if they are decorated and hard to clearly notice- no bueno."
