What is intermediate algebra?

Why do college students have to take intermediate algebra before they can take probability and statistics?

  • I got so frustrated a couple weeks ago because I didn't pass the second half of intermediate algebra (I took the course in 2 sections) and now I can't take probability and statistics, which really suck because now I have to postpone my graduation and transfer date to next year because I didn't finish in time due to the bad grade I got in the class. It's ridiculous because what does algebra have to do with probability and stats? I was informed by a tutor that probability and stats is just fake math. I really hate algebra because I struggle with it every time and I was fighting to get a passing grade in that class. Why in the world do community colleges require intermediate algebra to be completed with a C or P grade in order to enroll in probability and statistics course when they are 2 diverse branches of mathematics?

  • Answer:

You can't do any other kind of math without algebra. It is necessary for ALL math. You need it in ALL math. It is the grammar of the math world. You will need it for introduction to probability and statistics. If you take anymore probability and statistics you will need calculus 1 & 2. I have a math degree and a master's degree in probability and statistics. It's "real" math. That tutor doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'm only in high school, but I'm talking algebra 2 right now and we have recently learned about probability and some statistics have been thrown into it. They probably want to name sure you can do the more basic stuff and different kinds of math before they have you go on to what you want. This is just my opinion and it may be wrong.

Because you need the math background before you go on to something more complex like probability and stats or college math. Also it is a prerequisite. In my college you don't even get credit for beginning and intermediate algebra, they're 010 and 030 courses. It's something for high school kids to take, if not they let you make it up in college. Sorry, wish I had a better answer. :( Btw I hope that tutor is a tutor for art class cause that person is wrong. Fake math? Not smart!

I'm pretty sure passing algebra is a basic college requirement. Most if not all transferees are required to prove competency in algebra. As many majors require basic calculus as transfer requirement. Therefore I doubt your inability to transfer is due to being unable to take probability and statistics, but due to your inability to do algebra.

Probability and Statistics is not FAKE math. It is very rational to require the prerequisite because I'm certain that you will not pass P&S if you can't pass the prerequisite. The school is not trying to punish you or make life difficult.
