How can I start a garden?

Can anyone please give me tips on how to get safe water to nourish the edible back yard garden I'd like to start?

• I'm in Bethpage, NY. Any 1 can look up what is going on with our water & soil on web. I want to grow veg, berries & herbs. Going to store daily. We aren't vegetarians. But stick to organic. Specialty grocers get expensive! I'm most curious on best method for safe water to garden. We can't do entire home filter. We filter faucets/showers & have cooler for drinking. Any tips for novice edible garden grower would be appreciated. We already have boxes.

  I know you've looked up all these awful things about water on the internet, but have you ever actually had your water tested? Do that if you haven't. Honestly, some of the worse contaminants and toxins come not from your tap, but from rainwater. Unfiltered, unsanitized rainwater that picks up the gasses and the dust in the air. And that's going to get on ANY garden, both the one in your backyard and the one in the grocery store.
