Where can I obtain prison records?

How do I obtain my deceased mothers medical records from illinois regarding any hereditary issues I might have inherited for my own knowledg

  • I know there is a Hippa law of course but how do I obtain my deceased mothers medical records for my own personal knowledge of any hereditary issues I will face as I get older. I would like to know about the medical issues my mother had and suffered from but my stepfather told me the Hippa law bares me from any and all records I'm trying to obtain them myself for my own knowledge.

    Your stepfather is correct ... the law prohibits her doctor from giving you her records, without her consent. Now, since she has died ... you MAY be able to show her death certificate, to get those records. I don't know the law well enough to say for certain, though. You should consult an attorney. A better option would be to ask any living relatives, on your mother's side, about health issues that have affected your family in the past. For instance, do they have a history of heart disease or cancer? If there is someone on that side who is into genealogy, that would be the person to start with.

Ask your own Doctor how that might be done. Honestly, I would not expect to gain too much knowledge from the records. My Mom died from COPD, but she smoked and I never have.

Okay *unless* he specifically bars you from receiving this information you should be able to get it .. HIPPA covers patient records for 50 years after death... *except* in specific circumstances I am going to paste the relevant information in the comments... Keep in mind that as her husband he is technically "next of kin" so he has full control over her records but unless he tells her Dr's they can't release to you it shouldn't be a problem. (and I don't see why he would do this unless he's just a jerk or trying to hide something she didn't want you to know XD )
