How to learn online?

How long will it take for a 13 year old to learn portuguese and where from? (online or 1 on 1 tutor)

  • I am around 13 and am really inspired to learn brazilian portuguese, I have been using babbel for a week or two for free (one of my friends invited me). I have heard that depending on how smart you are or how you learn depends on it so heres some info along those lines: I am #1 at english, grammar, spelling and maths in my grade and #2 in woodwork comprehension japanese and IT. Does anyone have an estimate of how long it will take for me to learn brazilian portuguese as well as from what source? Thanks

Depending on your aptitude, it's possible to become fairly proficient in a new language in just a few months. True mastery usually takes years, but don't let that discourage you -- one step at a time. As far as where to learn, I would highly, highly recommend: http://www.duolingo.com It simultaneously teaches you to read, write, listen to, and speak, whichever language you're learning, *and* it's free!

it will take a while to become fluent but to understand the basic vocabulary and grammar it shouldn't take more than 4 months

It would take a couple months using a computer based program, or a live teacher. BUT, unless you find a person locally to SPEAK it, you won't learn the true sound of the language. Practice, Practice, Practice. It takes live, alot of, and repetitive speaking to gain fluency. Good Luck

Practice every day, and once you have basic phrases down, look for forums that are primarily in Portuguese, so that you can get a better feel for how natives speak/write it. I would suggest using Duolingo - it's free and very easy to use. https://www.duolingo.com/

What exactly is a round 13? Because if your 12 you're not allowed to be on this Site

It is different for everyone. It really doesn't depend on all those other things. I knew students who had straight As in everything but their foreign language. And I knew kids who were barely making Cs and they pick up a foreign language. For some It was just the matter of the language they were trying to learn. They would struggle in Spanish and change to German or French and would do fine. Either way, for you learn enough to visit a country should take 12 months, but to become fluent will take years.

It depends on different factors such as your aptitude and how highly motivated you are. It is easier the younger you are. The best method is total immersion but that's not always available. I've heard Rosetta Stone is good but it's a little expensive. Native speakers are often glad to help you learn and more likely to teach you how it is used as opposed to just the formal way of using it. It's always good to know more than one language. I wish I'd kept up with my French but I speak very little French now because I didn't. You will probably have more opportunity to use Portuguese and Spanish. They are not the same but they do have things in common. Knowing one might make it easier to learn the other. Portugal has a rich history in world events. I am part Portuguese and I think it would be cool to speak the language but I don't. Of course I'm Heinz 57 so if I spoke all the languages of my various ancestors I'd really be a polyglot.
