How long does it take to become a regular doctor and then a surgeon?
-
I love to help people with all sorts of things. Ever since I was a little kid, ive wanted to become a doctor. It never struck me how long it would take to actually become one. I know you need to do basic elementary school then middle school for 2 years the high school for 4 years then college for 4 years then med school for 4 years. When I calculated that for me, I got that I was going to be 25 by the end of med school. but is that really true? wouldn't it take longer to get different degrees and such? if so, how long would EVERYTHING school/learning/training related take before I can go out and actually start my job as a doctor or a surgeon?

Answer:
The process for both is the same for college and mostly for med school. They both spend 4 years in college, 4 years in med school, and both graduate with either a MD or DO. It is after they graduate they enter their post grad education called residency. For regular doctors (both family med and internal medicine) it is 3 years and for surgery it ranges from 5-6 years depending on what surgery. It is after residency, that you are a fully trained and able to practice on your own.

After 12 years of basic education, you have 4 years for your bachelor's degree, and 4 more years of med school. After that, you have 1-2 years of residency. For a surgeon, depending on the type of surgeon, you can add another 3-5 years.

After med school the shortest residency is 2 years for Family Medicine and the longest is 7 years for neurosurgery. General Surgeons usually do 4 years of residency; other surgeons usually 5 General Internists generally do 4 years ; subspecialists ( respirology haematology, gastroenterology etc.) usually do 5. Similarly general pediatricians do 4; Pediatric subspecialists 5 Psychiatrists usually do 4

You need a four year Bachelor's degree, four years of medical school to get the basic MD degree. However, you then need at least 2 years of residency or more depending on specialty. For a surgeon, you should estimate at least 5 years post medical school. Even then you aren't "done", as medical doctors need to attend continuing education and conferences to keep their knowledge current and their licenses valid. 25 is a very optimistic estimate. Even if you chose family medicine, one of the shorter residencies, you won't be able to practice on your own without 11 years of post high school education. That puts you closer to 30. Even then, no matter what money you make you'll be in a huge amount of debt from medical school.
