can you take a year off of school after graduating high school and still get scholarships for college?
-
okay, my dad and I are arguing over this. my boyfriend graduates this year but he wants to take a year off before he goes to college. his grades aren't good enough for an academic scholarship, so that's not what I mean. such as he lives in Tennessee so he gets the hope scholarship, or grants or whatever. will he lose the opportunity to get those? or can he still sign up for those whenever he decides to go. he needs to get his life together a little more and prepare better, since his parents helped him with nothing and he's lost a lot of opportunities to sign up for some scholarships. also, he doesn't have a car, and needs the summer to work and save up for one. my dad thinks he will lose all scholarship and grant opportunities if he takes the year off.

Answer:
It can be a lot harder to get some of them, because in many cases one of the requirements is to be a graduating senior. Also, he'll be competing with people who are very highly motivated, as evidenced by their going straight to college right out of high school, which can hurt his chances as well. He can still fill out a FAFSA form, which will get him some financial aid, as well as things like a Pell grant. So he wouldn't been completely out of the running. But honestly he shouldn't pin his hopes on scholarships anyways. My son for example, who has done everything you are supposed to do, lots of extra-curricular activities, progressive leadership roles in various organizations, great recommendations, a GPA that is like in the top 5% of his class, and an actual financial need, and all the scholarships he applied for came back with "sorry to inform you..." letters. Very frustrating, to be sure. :(

See Sephira's answer first. Whenever I see a story like the one you wrote, I think why isn't this person choosing to go to the local Community College without a gap (year) in education? In my experience a gap often results in putting off going to College indefinitely. Another option could be military service.

Try to talk to an admissions officer in colleges he's interested in. Look up the number in the phone book or information. Ask for the admissions office. Tell them the problem.
