Answer:
"they" is not something you can track down: This is because the 8 cups amount is an urban myth. Here is one article: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256 I am not a doctor and probably could use more water....

They mean 64 ounces, which is sbout 2 liters. Water makes up a major portion of our bodies. It is also vital for eliminating toxins via sweat and urine. Insufficient water intake will lead ti illness and ultimately death.

8 cups = 1/2 a gallon (just under 2 liters) water helps carry toxins out of your body when you urinate. drinking to little water isn't going to hurt you and drinking a lot isn't necessarily going to make you healthy. The 8 cups is just an average for the average peoson but you don't have to get that much exactly. however, if you workout a lot, have dry skin, lots if acne or verry dark urine... you probably want to drink more.

MYTH, bad science. That's what that is. It's origin is uncertain and there's been sloppy reporting for decades that has accepted this "wisdom". Actual scientists have stated about how much water a day we need, but it's clear that much of that water comes from the food we eat, NOT plain water to drink. - Kidney specialists do agree on one thing, however: that the 8-by-8 rule is a gross overestimate of any required minimum. To replace daily losses of water, an average-sized adult with healthy kidneys sitting in a temperate climate needs no more than one liter of fluid, according to Jurgen Schnermann, a kidney physiologist at the National Institutes of Health. One liter is the equivalent of about four 8-ounce glasses. According to most estimates, that's roughly the amount of water most Americans get in solid food. In short, though doctors don't recommend it, many of us could cover our bare-minimum daily water needs without drinking anything during the day. I find a cup of water to be about 24 swallows total. Try to do this at least five times a day.

Since our bodies are made-up of 75% water, don't be concerned with the 8 cups per day ritual... Although I drink water all day, with everything I eat, you only need to drink when you are thirsty... Since everyone is different, 8 cups per day might be too much water for you to consume, which could cause water intoxication, whereby your sodium level in your body drastically drops...

Water is very important to our bodies. We excrete a lot naturally thru sweat, urine and feces and occasionally intestinal upheaval. If you play or exercise a lot you loose even more. And most people drink coffee, tea and/or sodas and/or alcohol, all of which are duretics that make up urinate excessively depleting our bodies of more water. People also eat too much salt which leavhes us of water. So yes the average person needs the equivalent of 8 cups of water or non-caffeine, non-alcoholic liquids per day to be properly hydrated and healthy. If you eat lots of fruit and veggies yiu are getting some that way. If you dont you are likly one of the millions of people chronically dehydrated due to poor liquids intake. And since everything in our bodies requires liquid to function correctly, dehydration is bad.

1 cup equals 8 ounces. So if you drink 4 16.9 ounce bottles of water a day your drinking over 8 cups. The more water u drink the better. Water helps clean bad stuff out of your body. In a way it helps you lose or maintain your weight and many other benefits.
