In Resume for internship, do I really need to put my work and volunteer experiences?
-
I am a junior engineering student, and I'm looking for an internship for this summer. I have a question about the resume. Actually I don't have long term work and volunteer experiences. What I have experienced are teacher at language school for only two days, and some one-day volunteers. I guess most companies don't expect intern students have so many work experiences, so I wonder how about delete work and volunteer experiences from resume, and put additional academic projects instead of them. But I'm worrying that if employers read my resume and cut me out from candidate because they don't see work and volunteer experienced on the resume. What do you think? I would appreciate your opinion.

Answer:
Internships usually designed to build up more of a second level of supervisors / managers at any business, so that`s totally different from applying for a professional career job, where you`d need to have certain types of skills / experience to do the job... In Internships to be accepted, you`d be evaluated based upon your personality, attire, aspirations, vision, planning skills, and commitment. In some firms, it takes a great deal to find an intern or management trainee, so that upon the right selection, they`d would tie you up with a commitment contract that would keeps you within for a certain time after the internship finishes.

If you don't have much traditional work experience you could try creating a "skill" or "functional" resume (you should be able to search examples of this format on-line). This type of resume highlights the experiences/achievements you've had that demonstrate and employment-related skill.

You definitely want to list any relevant experience that you have (volunteer or otherwise), because if you don't, they will give it to someone who has that experience over you. Rather than list each volunteer opportunity separately, I would suggest grouping it by what you did, then listing who you did it for. Example: Have participated as a volunteer in various teaching opportunities with organizations such as XYZ, ABC, and LMN.

Be honest. If you don't have that type of experience, put None. Companies that employ Engineers and hire interns want to find very smart, creative and dedicated people. Don't worry about what you don't have. Add a couple of things that might catch the eye of someone who looks at your resume an application. Good luck.
