How can I make my boyfriend feel better about himself?

  • My boyfriend of 3 months is absolutely incredible and treats me like a princess. He has mentioned to me before things like I'm too good for him, he doesn't think he's attractive, he doesn't dress nicely or brush his hair, has insecurities regarding his appearance and overall sees himself in a very negative way. Being his girlfriend, I love him exactly how he is, but I can't help wanting him to feel better about himself. He has mentioned before that a "voice" in his head always tells him he's not good enough, no one respects him, everyone's lying to him, etc. This may be the root to a bigger problem like a mental disorder, but I'm not sure. I just want to help my boyfriend help himself. Any advice would be great!

    If he's self conscious about his appearance, but he doesn't do anything about it, he probably either doesn't care as much as you think he does, or he's trying to look humble. As for the voice in his head, that could be his conscious, or it could be a mental disorder like schizophrenia. You might want to get that one checked out...

By 'Voice' he may mean 2 different things. Like your conscious where you talk to yourself in your head or he may mean' he hears voices'. Maybe he needs therapy?

tell him that you don't care about the little flaws he has. just say, "you're perfect to me, & nothing can change that."

Perhaps a little loving "cognitive dissonance "would work. Remind him that if he is saying that you're "too good for him" means that he is questioning your judgement about his worth and you think he is wrong. If he says that is proof that you're too good for him, tell him that is a specious answer and unacceptable. Tell him that he has to accept your opinion as valid and proceed accordingly.

At the least your boyfriend is damaged emotionally and I would watch carefully for signs of progression. Sometimes folks who put themselves down start to question why other folks even like them and sometimes a dangerous situation develops for the girlfriend.
