How do i write an good epilogue?

Do you write and Epilogue when your story is done, or do you write it to hint on the next book? Or is that what a Prologue does?

  • I'm writing a book on Wattpad, and it's almost over but I have everything lined out. I'm confused on whether or not to add an Epilogue or a Prologue. What's the difference? Is one found in the beginning and the other found in the end? I do want to continue the story, but the book is over. Please help!

  • Answer:

Prologues are at the beginning, and generally are used to foreshadow, give backstory, or to give details that are relevant to the story, but maybe happened at a different time or place. Epilogues are at the end, and are used to tie up any loose ends, or just give extra information that is relevant, but wasn't completely necessary to the rest of the book (like at the end of Harry Potter, the epilogue fast-forwards 19 years to show how everyone is doing - it wasn't necessary, but it was a nice bonus). They can of course be used to hint at whatever is coming next, as well.

Prologues come BEFORE the main story begins hence the prefix '-pro'. Epilogues come AFTER. Most stories dont have either one. You only use them if truely necessary, prologues esp. Only use an epilogue if you think your readers just HAVE to lnow something that occured after the end of the story. They arent used to introduce a sequel. If theres hoing to be a next book directly related to the first that needs to be foreshadowed in the main story. If you look at most best selling stories, however, they have neither a prologue or an epilogue. They are tools an author CAN use but are not required and are not always needed. Occasionally a mystery/suspense author will use a prologue to show the crime occuring or introduce his villain some how. And occasionally an author might use a prologue to introduce an event, often something in the past, that is a big part of the main stories plot. Epilogues ive seen are most often used by romance writers to show a couples wedding or pregnancy and show they really did live happily ever after.
