Can a Methodist pray the Holy Rosary?
-
I have been a Methodist for a month or so, and was given a lovely Rosary for Christmas. Is it against Methodism to pray the Rosary? Thank you.

Answer:
Rosaries are more of a Catholic keepsake but could surely be used by any denomination. You'd have to be an extremely hard-line Methodist to discourage the use of something like that. I don't see why anyone would care what you chose to pray with whether it's a rosary or a piece of string you found outside your house.

According to wikipedia, some other Christian religions, Methodist included, do use them. I am not sure if the prayers are the same but I believe there is further info on that site.

Well whoever gave it to you most of thought you were Catholic. Don't believe your ready to convert your religion, but if you know someone who is Catholic you could surprise them and ask them if they would like it.

I was raised Methodist, but in our sect, rosaries were not used or encouraged. However, some Methodist sects do accept the use of rosaries (if desired) -- however the prayers said while using the rosary are distinctly different than those used by Catholics. Often, the Common Book of Prayer is used as a source, but (again) it depends on your particular sect. I would suggest, since you are new to your church, that you ask your own minister for guidance on the matter. :-)

I dont see why you couldnt but you certainly dont need a string of beads and a bunch of rote memorized prayers to talk to God. In catholocism esp rossries have become an idol of sorts, a man made earthly object they put too much significance in and reliance on. If you want to talk to God talk to Him. A necklace is unnecessary. And if you are craving a physical object as if you need that man created object to help you focus on God, be very careful of what may actually be seeking to turn you.

My brother once gave me a rosary he got directly from the Vatican, he said it was even blessed with holy water. I accepted it because of the love I have for my brother and I didn't want to disappoint him. When I got home, I threw it away. My point is that I'm not Catholic. Whatever your religion is, if you place your faith in its doctrine (teachings), then give yourself fully to it, learn the history of Methodists for example and never compromise with other religions.

Of course, but if you say the Catholic prayers, google: rosary 15 promises. Try to pick a Catholic site. I hope this is helpful. Frank

You (if you are a methodist or any sort of Protestant) can pray the Rosary...just understand that if you intend to pray it you are using distinctly Catholic prayers (which may or may not bother you or your denominations theology/policy).
