In my opinion having had a course in Photography in high school will have no effect on your application to be accepted into a University.

High school classes don't interest anybody much. More important is that there is no job called "photographer". There are journalists with cameras, explorers with cameras, scientists with cameras, social consultants with cameras, and others. You have to have another job to support your photography.
