Gluten Free Thanksgiving?

Is there a good brand of gluten-free mini tart pastry shells available in super markets?

  • I am going to my friends house for thanksgiving and I am bringing the desserts. The host is gluten free / vegan and 2 other friends are vegetarian. (only 4-5 people will be there). The host suggested a mincemeat tart because one friend loves mincemeat. I really want to use mini tarts shells. Are there any suggestions in the way of "brands" in stores that are very good. As I am not vegetarian, I'm not sure about the best product. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Few grocery stores carry gluten free anything, but you can usually find rice flour, or maybe you can get a flour grinder somewhere and grind flour yourself. It's not much effort to make pie crusts (though I have no experience with rice flour). Get wide mouth mason jar rings and lids and line them with aluminum foil for your pie plates. The recipe is here: http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/blunt132.html but use shortening instead of lard or butter. Like this: http://honeyvillefarms.blogspot.com/2013/11/minature-pies-recipe.html I googled some recipes. They use an awful lot of ingredients I never heard of. Maybe you need your host's advice on this project.

Much to my surprise, Big Lots has a pretty good selection of Gluten free desserts. This is in Austin,TX. Could vary in different cities.
