What are some interesting biology topics?

• My partner and I have to create a science display board for our school, however, we are not sure of what topic is base our research on. The teacher wants something /interesting/, not typical topics such as cancer or common diseases.Any ideas? It would have to be a topic where lots of information is available online.

  Prion diseases, like Mad Cow Disease! Prions are basically mid folded proteins that cause diseases that pretty much turn your brain into a sponge. Plus... They aren't living, so you can't stop them. And most humans have a benign and naturally occurring prion in the brain that aids in cell death, communication and sleep cycles. When you come in contact with anything contaminated with prions, since nothing can kill them, the bad prion form, PrP-res, converts them into the bad kind and they take over your brain and begin to destroy it. It's very interesting stuff! You could foxus on Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Kuru (so fascinating and combines cannibalism with brain eating disease... Super cool ;)) or Mad Cow Disease. If you're a big hunter, research Chronic Wasting Disease, also a prion disease. It's amazing yet absolutely terrifying. I wrote a huge essay on prions and it may be getting published- so excited!
