Can a relationship work between USA and Peru?
-
Im a US Citizen volunteering n Peru for 2 yrs. I met my boyfriend 6m ago here n Peru. He is everything I could ask for. But,He is a Peruviandoctor licensed 2 practice med n Peru only. We researched the process 4 him 2 get his license n USA but I honestly don’t feel comfortable allowing him 2 go through that process. He is 32 and he has worked hard to complete his educ. here in Peru n 2 make him START OVER AGAIN 2 get licensed in the USA feel wrong; selfish. He only wants 2 do it for me not 4 himself. I am 26 still “figuring out” my future. I have my bachelors but I was hoping to start Grad sch when I returned n work with the fedl gov. But, he is already a Dr. Y make him start over when he already hasa career? So, im considering living here. But I never considered living in PERU? I liv here now but there is an expiration date that I think of constantly.Should I allow him to start process of getting his license in the USA? It’s so expensive and grueling n takes YEARS! I mean what if we break up? What if I stay here? What will I do? my family? My friends? What if we travel back n forth? But PERU!? It’s so expensive n far and I don’t want a long distance relationship at 26. Help!

Hi there, I would consider looking into it further. You have only been with your boyfriend 6 months so there is no point uprooting either one of your lives based on a relationship that is still in the 'honeymoon period'. So many relationships end after only a year or two that you are right - there is no point committing long term to changing your life for another person that you may not stay with. I would just like to point out firstly that mature age students who have working experience and prior education get CREDIT for their working history and past subjects via organising a cross-institutional credit transfer. Get him to look into this to see if he can get credit for some if not most of his medical studies - then he would only need to complete a few subjects to be qualified in the US possibly.

Sounds like to have a real relationship your only long-term choice will be to move to Peru. You could do the fly back and fourth thing for awhile, but without an end-game plan that will put you both in the same city its not really going to be satisfying.
