How can you become a paramedic in a firehouse setting?
-
I am interested in being a paramedic when i graduate high school next year. I will be a certified EMT when I graduate, then I will get my paramedic. I want to live in LA, San Diego, or San Francisco areas. And I want to work be stationed in a firehouse. I did research and found firefighter/paramedic. Is that the ambulance crew of the firehouse? i read that it is just an advanced firefighter for medical situations, not related to the ambulance paramedics. firehouse paramedics make substantially more than private ambulance services too. I have always wanted to work in a firehouse, but as a medic. so if anybody could clear this up that would be great. thanks!

Answer:
It depends on the authority having jurisdiction. Some jurisdictions require you to be hired prior to going through recruit school. Some places require you to go through the fire academy before hand. After you complete the paramedic program you need to enroll into a fire academy. In most fire departments you have to be licensed in both firefighting and at least EMT.

Hi Drew, I worked as a Firefighter/Paramedic for 12 years. Most career departments are moving towards only hiring paramedics due to the large volume of medical calls received. If your only an EMTB it may be a condition of employment that you obtain a Paramedic within 18-24 months of hire date. Here where I live, departments are more than happy to send you to school for free to get your paramedic, then pay you more once certified. Most departments work their paramedic/firefighters on a rotational schedule. This means you may work one shift on the ambulance, then the next on the fire engine. My department runs Paramedic ALS fire engines, and they are dispatched on most medical runs as a first responder unit or manpower. If your looking to make more money and only work the ambulance, you should look at a dedicated County run 911 EMS. Those paramedics only ride the box and typically make more money than transfer service. I know California uses a stand alone physical agility test called the CPAT, and you need to study it and practice before testing. It would also help to start jogging everyday for 1.5 to 3 miles to condition your body before hand.
