What to put in my 10 gallon tank?

What happens if I put an 'up to 5 gallon' heater in a 10 gallon tank?

  • I'm trying to set up a tank for a betta, and I know they like warmer water. If I put an 'up to 5 gallon' heater in a 10 gallon tank, will it even do anything? Will it heat 5 gallons' worth of water? SLIGHTLY heat the whole thing?

  • Answer:

If the temperature in the room is low over a period of time that causes the water in the tank to cool two things can happen: ---- The heater won't be able to keep the water at the correct temperature since it doesn't have enough 'horsepower' (wattage) to do the job. If the room is very cold for a long period of time, the tank temperature can fall to 'unhealthy' levels. ---- The tank heater may come on and never turn off since it can't heat the water enough. This may cause the heater to fail by running for extended period of time. You may just want to get a 10 gallon heater, they're like $6 to $14 and WalMart sells them.

Beta don't care. Basic fish are around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Unless it gets really cold where you live don't use one. But yes it would still have an effect on your tank. get a thermometer for tank. they cost about 5 to 7 bucks:) A little above and a little bellow 77 degrees isn't bad. Good luck with the tank?
