Which summer job should I choose?

If I get a summer job, do I have to work all week and be off on weekends or can I choose what days I want to work?

  • I'm going to be 14 this summer and I'm planning to work at chick fil a. I want to be able to have time to have fun as well in my summer so I want to work maybe 3 days a week or so (i haven't decided) So if I do get a summer job, do I have to work the full week (except weekends) like everyone else? I know there are laws for kids working but I don't know much about them. Help please!(The state I want to work in is Virginia if that helps)

  • Answer:

In the interview, be up front about how often you are willing to work and when. Also, talk with your parents about any upcoming family trips you are going to take. Bring a calendar of those dates to the interview and tell them these are you cannot work because your parents need them. If the interviewer is not willing to work with these restrictions, this is not the place for you to work. NOT getting a job there is a good thing. Your best bet is to find a local grocery store. They have enough staff to keep moving with or without you and are usually very well versed in the local minor labor laws (Virginia's is in the link below). http://www.doli.virginia.gov/laborlaw/laborlaw_faqs_childlaborlawp1.html

It just depends on where you work

Usually your boss will determine your work schedule. If you NEED a certain day off they may work w/ you. But if you want a job, you work what they tell you. Welcome to the REAL world.

No you don't get to choose the days you work, You work when your supervisor schedules you to work.

You will work according to the schedule that the manager makes. Most likely you will work some week days/nights and some weekends.

If you get a job you don't choose your hours they choose them for you. They may ask you what available time and at times weekends are not omitted for your pleasure. You either want to work or not is your choice. Unless your working for a family establishment pretty much the same.
