How to make furniture look a little antiquey and french?

I'd like to make my bedroom look more.. Sophisticated. It's got way too many different furniture colors, how can I make it look neater?

My nightstand, dresser and one other piece of furniture is cherry. my desk is cedar, the trim and my doors are white as well as a hanging shelf, my bookshelf is matte cherry, and my walls are purple (AWFUL RIGHT? I'm going to repaint in the spring, but I need help on which color). my mom is an interior designer, but I don't want her to spend so much money on this as money is tight right now. I recently bought some black and white photos of NYC that I LOOVE but they don't match. I basically want to know how I can make this all match, what to get rid of and what to add, and what color to paint my room. thank you

    White. Some people can choose a color and make it look like they knew what they were doing, but if you need advice the advice is white. You can get lots of shades of white, but if you use an actual color you will be surprised by how dark it looks, much darker than it looked in the paint store. So paint your room white, and if you want more color you can hang posters or curtains or something. Furniture being different types of wood is not a problem. Just decorate around them as if you meant to choose that piece. paint three walls off-white and the wall you want to hang black and white photos on any bright color of your choice. This will make the room look more spacious, make the colored wall pop out and off-white is a good background for all colors of furniture. hope this helps.

Paint the walls an antique white its very neutral on the side of tan which will go well with the cedar and the cherry. If you think this is too plain put an accent wall in a burnt umber shade keep it light though. The wall you would do that to is the furthest wall from the door. It adds depth to the room. Good luck. Can you paint any of your furniture? I would paint what you could white to match the trim and shelves. Plus it will go with whatever color you chose to paint in the spring. Also look for something to be your inspiration. I recently redid my bedroom and it is all based on a set of curtains I fell in love with. They have a turquoise and silver grey print an off white background. I took the curtains to the paint store and had them match the turquoise. I bought turquoise sheets, and I already had an off white quilt. Painted some old lamps a deeper turquoise then the walls. I also bought an inexpensive grey throw rug for the floor. I looks great!

if its restainable why not restain the pieces to fit a light gray colour, perfect for the b&w photos white will also go well. keep the stain dark, but not black.

I would get the Rustoleum Cabinet Refinishing Kit and paint the furniture all black and add crystal knobs as an accent. Could even do drawers in a cream color. Then paint 3 walls cream and the 4th wall I would do 16" horizontal stripes in black flat and black gloss paint. Then add photos and a few mirror accent pieces. You could even do a vintage chandelier.
