What's the process of leasing a car?

Whats the process of buying a used car at a dealer?

  • it's my first car and I'm 19 so Idk what to do lol or anybody to show me. I saw a car on cars.com. I haven't seen the car physically but it looks like the best one and I checked on Craigslist too. I plan on going to see it tomorrow . If I do like the car how would the buying process be from then on.

  • Answer:

Having worked as a car salesman in the past, I can advise you on a couple points: 1). Are you BUYING a car or FINANCING a car? If you're paying 100% of the total cost, you're buying it. If you need a loan from a bank, you're financing it. If you plan on getting a loan, know what you've got for a down-payment & what you can afford for monthly payments... before you go look at any cars. 2). Since you're looking at used cars, get someone that KNOWS mechanics to look at the car with you, assuming you don't know $#-+ about cars. Legally, you can take the car to any mechanic of your choice to inspect the car prior to purchase. I strongly recommend you do so. If you're advised the car is going to need a lot of work, be prepared to walk away from the deal. 3). If the asking price is $5000 (for example), don't expect to make a low-ball offer of $3000 & get a deal. They probably don't have more than 10--15% room to move on used cars; & you'll certainly aggravate your salesman as the first thing to get chopped out is his commission. **** Good luck & have fun shopping!

if you are auto mechanically challenged, bring someone who knows cars, mechanic buddy.if not look it over for leaks. look under hood basic stuff ck oil, trans. power steering. start it drive it if possible. look back under hood pull tranny stick lock for tiny bubbles. if you see some that means tranny is leaking or wearing out. not good. crawl under car look for more leaks. ask a lot of questions, has it been wrecked, etc. I could go on and on. ck you tube, buying used car.

if it's Craigslist or any private seller you just go with them to transfer the tags and title. a dealer is a bit more involved unless you are paying all cash in full. either way you must have insurance. a dealer can probably help you get it but if you know the car you want you can call most insurance companies to give them all the info and they should be able to give you coverage immediately.

you pay for it the price you both agree on he signs the pink slip over to you. the dmv has a bill of sale form its yellow . save yourself a trip and bring one with you and have him fill it out then go toDMV and have it put in your name and pay the sales tax and registration fees. oh yea make sure he gives you a registration paper work also and that it is up to date. if he has not registered it in a few years you will have to pay for those years also. so make sure. check milage that its not way up there like 200 thousand miles cuz you'll probably be putting a bit of money into it all the time.

at cars.com the price of the car is set, there is no haggling. If you buy it you have a few days to change your mind and return it for a full refund no questions asked. Careful with craigslist, there are known scams regarding people selling cars.
