What should I do to follow up on my online job applications?

I've never had a job but I've volunteered before. So my applications look empty. My parents say to keep calling them to follow up?

  That volunteer work is very creditable and honorable! Where I live, the library will help you draft a resume using this volunteer work and show you how to job search on the computer. They actually have computers just for job searching or homework help. As to calling back to see if the position is filled, tell them you'd really like to work there and would even consider part-time. Make sure they know how and when to contact you. When you go to an interview, dress for the job you want! Polish your shoes! (Don't were tennis shoes!) Don't wear too much cologne! Smile and shake their hand. Always get up out of your chair when a lady enters a room. If someone asks if you'd like something to drink, ask for water. A glass or bottle of water gives you something to do with your hands and if you're a little stuck on an answer, you can take a sip of water to gather your thoughts and then speak. At the end of the interview, tell them you really want the job and will look forward to working there! Consider working as a "runner" for a law firm. It's a good start and will look good on a future resume - plus there might be promotions within the law firm!
