What exactly do you do for a photography major in college?

Should I major in photography in college?

  • I have a real passion for taking pictures and capturing the moment. I just don't know what I could do with a major in photography. What kind of jobs are available for someone who majored in photography? And does anyone know how much money can be made from a job in this field? Thanks :)

  • Answer:

I would not go to College and major in Photography. There are specialized institutes like Brooks Institute and I don't recommend it either. In my opinion the opportunity to make a living as a photographer has changed so much that there is not enough demand and very little opportunity to earn a living as a professional. Try to find an excellent local camera club and talk with all ages of members and get their take on it.

Taking pictures at weddings, family photos, Party's, and you could just take pictures that are really beautiful and sell them.

I agree with Wtaber. Majoring in photography will not provide you with job opportunities once you graduate. The world of photography has evolved into something very different than what it once was and even those very talented photographers today are finding themselves without opportunity of making money.

You can't make a living in photography. You can be a wedding consultant with a camera, or a reporter with a camera, or a wildlife scientist with a camera, but there is no job called "photographer".

I went into college as a biology major and was not happy at all. I realized that the only way I was going to be happy was if I switched to photography. I did switch my major to photography and I love it. I'm super worried about possibly not having a job when I graduate but I'm determined to prove people wrong. I'd say that if that's where your heart and passion truly is, then yes. But if you're not 110% in love with photography and determined to make it work then no, you should not!
