How to cut an orchid stem?

What do I do now that my orchid has dropped it's blooms?

  • My orchid finished flowering a couple of months back. At the time I cut the flower stem back to where the first flower had come out (as instructed on the orchid instructions). I assumed at that time that there would be some new growth that would happen, however apart from gaining an extra leaf nothing is really happening with the flower stem.I have tonight learned that you can cut the flower stem back to the base in order to help the plant focus its energy on leaf growth (since I'm clearly not going to get any new flower sprouts or baby orchids growing on the flower stem). Can anyone who has owned an orchid tell me what time frame I could expect for either a new flower stem or some baby orchids if this is the case? Will the plant produce any more buds?

Cut the stem back to the green part. Start watering it with a 1/4 strength mix of fertilizer, every week. As they say, WEAKLY WEEKLY. I have five in bloom right now, with a sixth getting ready.
