What is porous hair?

What hair type do I have and what can I do to make my curls as tight as they are at the roots and show through all of my hair?

  • Basically I have S shaped curls @ the bottom & middle of my hair, but only waves @ the top. My hair reaches around the middle of my back, & I feel like maybe my curls are weighed down a bit by the length of my hair. I don't want to get a major hair cut or anything; if there's any way I can help this without cutting my hair that would be great. I mean, @ the roots my hair looks like this! http://imgur.com/R23fUfp But the rest looks like a slightly worn out version of this http://imgur.com/LDWC822 also I make sure my hair is properly moisturized but it kind of frizzes a bit @ the top of my hair where it's not as curly as the rest of my hair. I asked this on Yahoo Answers & I didn't like the answers I got because they were all about keeping your hair healthy & not @ all about what hair type I have and what I can do to make my curls go all throughout my hair! I already keep my hair moisturized using Shea butter. I want 2 know what u think my hair type is based off of this info & what I can do 2 make all of my curls as tight as they are @ the roots. don't base your answer off of my profile pic I had it styled special there

  • Answer:

Well since you mentioned "S" shaped, it sounds like you have type 2b or 2c curls. Now I don't know if you've heard about this a million times, but you're gonna have to cut out many things if you want healthy, tight curls. Just like us curly girls' worse enemy is humidity, our other enemy is: heat and silicone! Heat fries your hair - loosing your curls and causing split ends. Silicone - causes buildup, weighs down your hair, and absorbs moisture from your hair. To get rid of the silicone, you're gonna have to use a clarifying shampoo. And watch out from shampoos too, just because it says "Clarifying Shampoo" doesn't mean it doesn't contain silicone. You'll have to check for a clarifying shampoo that does not contain it. (to be continued, my answer is a long one)
