What kind of insect is this?

Today in my mom and I's apartment, we saw a black, big bodied insect with legs that jumped from the kitchen to the front door. and my mom swears it was a spider because it had spider legs but we aren't sure what kind of insect it was. So from my description, can someone tell me what kind of insect they think it was?
